The recent New Year's holiday resulted in a rash of driving-while-impaired arrests, state police in Washington and Oregon reported.
Washington State Patrol troopers arrested 253 people suspected of being impaired by drugs or alcohol over the New Year's holiday weekend, said Dan Coon, WSP spokesman. The arrests occurred between 5 p.m. Saturday and midnight Monday.
The number of people arrested in Washington state for DUI by WSP troopers over the holiday weekend decreased compared to the 286 people who were arrested for DUI in 2010. Of the 253 people arrested in 2011, 32 were involved in DUI collisions, Coon said.
During a shorter period, Oregon State Police troopers arrested 47 people for driving under the influence of intoxicants between Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday, according to an OSP release.
Last year troopers reported 41 DUII arrests during the same period. Troopers arrested 34 DUII drivers two years ago, the release said.
