WALLA WALLA -- "Blue: Like the Glitter in a Child's Hair," new works by Anik Samu Kuschatka, will be displayed Jan. 12, at the Walla Walla Roastery, 290 A St.
The exhibition is a series of modern "icon like" images of mothers with their children, according to a news release. The images are hand colored, painted and embellished photos on wood.
"As a child I have always loved icons. There is a feeling you get when you see the mysterious bond between Jesus and Theotokos (Mary) on icons. When I became a mother I was in sheer awe of the gift of God. A child in my arms, who is no one's but my own and here it is before me. There really is no greater gift," Kuschatka said in the release.
"It's the most mysterious and amazing gift anyone could ever get. In my images I wanted to capture the connection between mother and child and God. I wanted to combine these images using my love and admiration of artists, Klimt, Tolouse-Lautrec and what I call 'Liberace Kitsch' as well as bits and pieces of my love of '70s and of '80s TV programs."
The Jan. 12 opening will take from 5 to 7 p.m. with the series unveiled at 5:30.
