ASOTIN - Asotin took control of the Southeast 2B girls basketball race this weekend.

The Panthers defeated Waitsburg-Prescott 59-43 Friday night and handed DeSales its first league loss here Saturday, 40-28.

Asotin got off to a hot start Saturday night as they took control with a 16-7 lead after one.

"We weren't prepared for their physical play," DeSales coach Tim Duncan said. "We didn't play well all night. They were better tonight and took us out of what we wanted to do offensively."

The Irish fought back to trail 24-17 at the half, and got within three in the second half, but couldn't get over the hump.

"As poorly as we played, we battled back and cut it to three with opportunities to get closer," Duncan said. "We couldn't get it done. They were the tougher team tonight."

Brielle Whitaker led the Panthers with 12 points.

Claire Konen led the Irish with eight points. Allison Wujek grabbed eight rebounds to lead DeSales to a 33-28 advantage on the glass.

The Irish drop to 2-1 in league and travel to Waitsburg Friday.
