MILTON-FREEWATER - A 3-point barrage did Mac-Hi in here Friday in its Greater Oregon League opener against La Grande.
La Grande connected on nine shots from beyond the 3-point arc, four in a decisive 25-5 third-quarter run, and posted a 65-29 victory over Mac-Hi in boys basketball action.
The Pioneers battled to a 21-10 deficit after the first 16 minutes, but the Tigers came out red hot to start the second half.
"Take away that big third quarter run, and it was a competitive game," Mac-Hi coach Curtis Carlson said. "We've been down by 20 or more at half, so being down 11 shows how far we've come. We're taking care of the ball better and grasping our offensive options."
Jesse Field led the Pioneers with eight points. Derek Richwine dropped in seven for Mac-Hi.
The Pioneers dropped to 0-1 in GOL play.
"Our guys are working hard and realizing that they can compete," Carlson said. "They know their roles and grasp our defensive philosophy. The score (Friday) is not indicative of the game. We're learning that we can play with anybody."
The Tigers got three scorers in double digits to open GOL with a 1-0 record.
Mac-Hi travels to Touchet Tuesday and returns to GOL play Saturday when Ontario visits.
