Weston-McEwen girls remain undefeated after 51-50 nail-biter

STANFIELD, Ore. - After a 53-37 win over an Irrigon team that had only lost three times on Friday night, Weston-McEwen pulled out a nail biting 51-50 win over Stanfield here Saturday in girls Blue Mountain Conference basketball action.

The TigerScots dug themselves into a hole Saturday as the Tigers raced to an 11-4 lead after one. Stanfield stretched the lead to 25-14 at intermission.

"We talked about how we play basketball," W-M coach Amber Doremus said. "We decided to be more active and we came out more active."

The TigerScots cut into the Stanfield lead and trailed 33-28 after three quarters.

"We just kept coming," Doremus said. "We never gave up, we just fought and fought."

Stanfield went to the free throw line with a 50-48 lead and 9.8 seconds left. W-M grabbed the rebound off the miss and had one last chance.

Makayla Christopher got a shot off, but it went off the rim.

"We had just talked about everybody doing their jobs," Doremus said. "We had to make sure we crashed the boards."

Molly von Borstel crashed the boards and got the put back to tie it at 50-50 and was fouled as the final horn sounded.

Von Borstel drained the free throw and W-M escaped with the 51-50 win.

Von Borstel led the TigerScots with a huge double-double, 20 points and 19 rebounds, none bigger than her last rebound of the night.

Kaci Kamm led Stanfield with 16 points.

W-M's Morgan Entze led all scorers with 21 points and added 10 boards to finish with a double double also.

On Friday, the TigerScots raced to a 20-9 advantage over Irrigon after one, and never looked back. Von Borstel went for 17 points, and Jaymie Zimmerman chipped in 10.

"We were prepared to play," Doremus said. "We tried a new press that worked and we got rebounds and ran the court well."

W-M improved to 4-0 in league and hosts Enterprise Friday.
