WALLA WALLA - Columbia Basin College proved why it is the No. 1 ranked women's basketball team in the NWAACC Saturday night, defeating Walla Walla Community College, 62-53.

The Warriors took the lead only once during the first half, but the Hawks quickly took it back to take a 33-30 lead into halftime.

"They (CBC) jumped us from the beginning," WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. "They started the game eight to nothing; they outworked us and outhustled us."

After halftime, CBC's Lacey Young took the ball and assisted Katherine Samuels on a break-away layup, starting a scoring frenzy for the Hawks and building a 13-point, game high lead.

WWCC's Sienna Edmunson started a Warrior comeback with a 2-pointer, followed by a Michelle Seitz 3-pointer. Seitz whiffed on another 3, but Tai Jensen scored off the rebound to whittle the CBC lead to six.

Columbia Basin then went on a shooting spree, shooting 3-for-3 and building an 11-point lead with just more than five minutes remaining in the game.

"53 points is just not us," commented Hazeltine. "They took out our top scorers (Hailey Felgenhauer and Leslie Stillar) who together only had six points.

"We did a good job defensively and outrebounded (the Hawks) 45-37; we turned the ball over a little more, and they executed things better."

"They really came ready to play today and we did not," Hazeltine said. "We have to give them credit."
