Mary E. Gillard of Walla Walla and formerly of Centralia, Wash., passed away Jan. 8, 2012, at her home at the age of 91 years. There will be no public services held. Inurnment will be in the Lewis County Cemetery in Winlock, Wash. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in memory of Mary E. Gillard to the Asthma Research in care of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR.

Mary E. Gillard was born on Aug. 4, 1920, in Centralia, to Leland Vinton (Doc) and Ruby Pearl (Brewer) Ellis. She grew up in neighboring Chehalis and attended twelve years of school there. After graduation in 1938, she enrolled in college at C.W.C.E. in Ellensburg, Wash. In 1941 Mary started teaching in Peshastin where she taught for 3 years until her marriage to James D. Gillard, Jr. in June 1944. They lived in Tampa, Fla., during the war where their son was born at McDill Air Force Base. After the war their homes were made in Alabama, Georgia and Texas while Mr. Gillard worked for the U.S. Public Health Service. In 1953 Douglas entered the University of Texas as a full time student and Mary started teaching in Austin in 1954 where she taught for 3 years. The Gillards moved back to Washington State in 1957 so Douglas could become a certified teacher and Mary began teaching in Chehalis. They both taught in the Chehalis schools until 1976 when they retired. Together they traveled throughout the U.S., Mexico and Italy. Mary was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, VFW Auxiliary and the Eagles Auxiliary. Her husband, James Douglas Gillard, Jr. preceded her in death on July 25, 2004.

Survivors include her son, James D. Gillard III of Walla Walla; four grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Her parents also preceded her in death.
