Rape trial delayed for Walla Walla man

Joshua A. Rutherford is accused of attacking girls in 2009 and 2010.

WALLA WALLA -- A new trial date has been set for a local man facing two rape charges.

Joshua A. Rutherford, 19, now is set for trial in Walla Walla County Superior Court beginning April 12.

Separate trials on the two charges had been scheduled for this week.

Rutherford is charged with second-degree rape for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old girl against her will in the summer of 2009.

He also faces a charge of third-degree rape of a child, accusing him of having sex in the summer of 2010 with a girl who was 14 years old.

Both of the alleged crimes -- which hadn't been reported to police until last spring -- took place at a residence in the area of the Walla Walla County Fairgrounds, according to police.

Rutherford, of 1909 Garrison St., was acquainted with both of the girls, officials said.

The charges were filed Aug. 2 and he was booked into the County Jail Aug. 16.

Bail on each case was set at $50,000.
