WALLA WALLA - Eisenhower was the more consistent team here Tuesday in Columbia Basin Big Nine boys basketball action.
The Cadets scored eight points in each quarter to finish with 32 points.
On the other hand, Wa-Hi jumped to a 34-16 lead at the half, survived a two-point third quarter, and posted its second consecutive league win with a 50-32 victory.
"We played well in the first half," Blue Devil coach John Golden said. "We hit some shots and defended pretty well and we didn't give up a single offensive rebound in the first half. Second half, we didn't come out with the intensity I would've liked to have seen. (But) we had some good looks against the zone, they just didn't go."
The Cadets grabbed their only lead of the night on a bucket by Tony French for a 4-2 Ike lead with 6:15 left in the first quarter. Nick Peasley answered for Wa-Hi to even it at 4-4. Rob Ferenz took a feed from Peasley and converted to give the Blue Devils the lead for good at 6-4 with 5:12 left in the first.
Spencer Locati drained two treys for Wa-Hi and the Blue Devils expanded the lead to 18-8 after one period.
Peasley led a Blue Devil 16-8 second-quarter run with five points, Locati finished the half with nine points and Wa-Hi outrebounded the Cadets 18-8 to take a commanding 34-16 lead to intermission.
"We decided to come out and play," sophomore guard Locati said. "We started playing more as a team."
A 3-ball from Andy Soto drew the Cadets within 34-23 with 3:33 to play in the third before Wa-Hi got on the board for the second half.
Locati broke the ice off a Ferenz feed and the Blue Devils bumped the lead to 36-23 with 3:10 left in the third. Ike could only score a free throw the rest of the way and Wa-Hi took a 36-24 lead to the fourth quarter.
"Everybody got a little bit lazy," Locati said of the Blue Devil third quarter. "Once we got over that, we started getting back into things and everything started going back to where it was."
Wa-Hi opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to increase the lead to 42-24 with 6:28 left. Locati scored all six Wa-Hi points with two of his buckets coming on feeds from Moe Handcox, who was appearing in only his third game after coming back from a football injury.
"I did what I could to help the team win," Locati said of his scoring. "Moe (Handcox) helped me out a little bit there (in the fourth-quarter run)."
"We're working Moe (Handcox) back in," Golden said of his senior co-captain. "He's rusty as he's been injured and hasn't played for a long time. It's nice to have him back. He's going to help us. It's just a matter of getting him back in basketball shape."
The Blue Devils substituted freely the rest of the way and improved to 2-3 in league with the 50-32 win.
"This was a big win as we had to protect home court," Golden said. "It was nice to be able to get a lot of guys in."
Locati led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Peasley finished with nine points, and Josh Eggers contributed six points, four assists and three steals.
"It was nice to have him (Locati) hit some shots and get some confidence," Golden said. "It's going to do nothing but help us down the road."
Wa-Hi travels to Chiawana Saturday, with the boys varsity game following the Blue Devil-Riverhawks varsity girls game.
