SPOKANE - Mount Spokane hosted the first event of the season for the Emerald Empire Youth Ski League (EEYSL) last weekend, the first competition for most of the Bluewood Alpine Race Team (BART) members this season.
The racing featured Giant Slalom races both Saturday and Sunday. Bluewood skiers captured 13 top 10 finishes, with seven of those being in the top five.
Primarily geared for racers in the Junior-6 through Junior-4 age classes, this event was also an opportunity for several of the junior racers to get their first course time this season, said BART program director Curtis Siess.
BART's Reid Reininger, who skis on the Junior team, spent the weekend training after competing in two events in December, Siess said. In the second of these events, Reininger broke into the top 10 in Giant Slalom and the top five in Slalom, and is hopeful for a spot on the Junior Olympic team this year.
The four members of the BART Junior team compete at Mount Spokane again this weekend in the season's first Junior-3 qualifier.
