WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi wrestlers were pinned in eight of 14 matches against the Moses Lake Chiefs, and were beaten by decision on another two matches as the Blue Devils fell in the Big Nine dual match, 58-15.
Wa-Hi managed four victories, three by decision and one by pin.
"Moses Lake is the type of team that you can't make mistakes against," Wa-Hi coach Clayton Hudiburg said. "We were ahead in a couple of matches and put our head in the wrong spot. It seems like when you do that, Moses Lake is going to pin you. That is exactly what happened. We wrestled tough and for lot of the matches we are still making mistakes. We have to learn to go a full six minutes without making mistakes."
The Blue Devils' pin came in the heavyweight division, 285 pounds, when Quinn Piver took a 2-0 lead on a reversal in the second round and then pinned his opponent, Justin Sainsbury, with 40 seconds remaining in that period.
The other three Wa-Hi wrestlers to garner a victory by decision were Anthony Stadler at 138 pounds, Zach Anderson (152) and Joel McClure (220).
Stadler trailed 4-2 after the first period and scored a flurry of points in the second period to win 12-6. His scoring was highlighted by three 2-point takedowns and a near fall for three points.
Anderson lead throughout the match and won 8-4, spurred by a couple of 2-point takedowns.
McClure won in grand style, 4-3, with a 2-point takedown to tie and take the lead at the buzzer at the end of the final period.
"The takedown at the buzzer was a good victory at 220 pounds, but I would have really liked to have seen wins at 195 and 170 pounds," Hudiburg said. "Those were matches that we were ahead in but lost anyway. We will just have to keep plugging away. Believe it or not, with a score like tonight, the way we wrestled, our kids are getting better and moving in the right direction. We really are. They're wrestling hard and competing better. (We) still have to learn to wrestle a full six minutes."
Out of the eight pins for Moses Lake, two occurred in the first round and three in each of the second and third periods.
At 170 pounds, Wa-Hi led 7-6 before Zane Henderson was pinned in the third.
At 195, Wa-Hi's Luis Santana also led 6-2 in the third before being pinned.
"We weren't going to beat a team like Moses Lake, not tonight anyway," Hudiburg said. "But you know we could have won more matches than we did. We were in them and were ahead in some of our losses. But you put you head in the wrong spot, like I said, against a team like this, away you go and that is it. We won four. I would have liked to have won six out of the 14 matches in the meet and I would have felt better about it."
The Blue Devils, 0-4 in Big Nine action, wrestle again in Pomeroy on Tuesday and then in two weeks at Chiawana.
