WAITSBURG - DeSales blanked Waitsburg-Prescott in the second quarter here Friday in girls Southeast 2B basketball action. W-P led 13-10 after one, but the Irish defense forced nine W-P turnovers, Annie Higgins drained two treys and the Irish went on an 11-0 second-quarter run.

W-P never recovered, and the Irish went on to post a 41-30 win.

"Terrible turnovers," W-P coach Jerry Baker said. "We played a decent first quarter, then we just went completely dead in the second quarter. But give DeSales credit, they are very aggressive defensively. Still, that's no reason for us to play the way we did. That second quarter put us in too big of a hole."

Kristin Potter scored 10-of-her-12 points in the first period for W-P to offset the six from DeSales' Claire Konen and propel W-P to a 13-10 lead.

The Irish held W-P to 0-for-11 shooting from the field over the second eight minutes and took a 21-13 lead to intermission.

"These games are difficult to play because we know each other so well and both sides make an unbelievable effort," Irish coach Tim Duncan said. "(But) we executed really well in the first half."

A Ronnie Hulce bucket at the 5:20 mark of the third quarter ended the shooting drought for W-P and brought them within eight of the Irish, 23-15.

A Dionna Baker put-back with 2:06 left in the third cut the Irish lead to 25-20.

"We fought back," coach Baker said. "(Then) we went dead again trying to over do everything."

Allison Wujek hit a bucket and converted a 3-point play to spark a 5-0 Irish run to close out the third period with the Irish in control at 30-20.

W-P had one more run and, following a Potter bucket with 3:48 left, was again within five, down 32-27.

Stephanie Ferrel hit a free throw and Chantel Blanc came off the Irish bench and promptly drained a 3-ball to put DeSales up 36-27 with 2:28 left.

Following a W-P turnover - its 25th of the game - Ferrel drained a trey to open an insurmountable, 39-27, DeSales lead with 2:05 left.

"Were those (3's) huge or were they huge," Duncan commented. "Right before Chantel goes in I tell her ‘you've got to be ready to make a shot.' She stepped up big. Then Ferrel hit the one (3-pointer) after that. Those two (3's) were just daggers."

Dionna Baker was the only other W-P player in double digits as she finished with 10 points and led W-P with seven rebounds.

"It's a learning process," coach Baker said of the loss. "Nobody could make a shot. It was one of those nights. We've got to have someone step up and want to take control. We'll go back to the drawing board and work at it."

Konen led the Irish with 12 points; Higgins added eight; and Wujek grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

"This (win) sets us up pretty good as now we have to defend our home court," Duncan said. "We can't stub our toe against someone else, but I like being in that position where all we have to do is defend our home court (both Asotin and W-P travel to DeSales in the second league round)."
