PASCO - Chiawana used a 21-7 second-quarter run to break from a 14-12 lead and take a 35-19 lead to intermission, digging a hole for Wa-Hi that it could not dig out of and handing Wa-Hi its first Columbia Basin Big Nine 4A girls basketball defeat as the Riverhawks posted a 63-49 win.

After the first round of conference play, the Blue Devils and Riverhawks are tied atop the standings at 5-1.

"We were neck and neck," Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said of the game's start. "They went on a run and we didn't respond. After that, it just spiraled out of control on us."

Delaney Hodgins and Sierra Perez did the damage for the Riverhawks. Hodgins scored a game-high 23 points, and Perez finished with 14.

"They just knocked down shots," Meliah said. "Perez hit four 3's, and we just lost track of Hodgins. We weren't ready to play."

The Blue Devils never recovered from that second period as the Riverhawks continued to pull away, outscoring Wa-Hi 28-20 over the last 16 minutes.

Mikayla Ferenz led the Blue Devils with 12 points, Torri Crawford added eight, and Andrea Hamada pulled down a team high four rebounds, even though the Riverhawks pounded the glass to a 41-27 advantage.

"Chiawana is extremely physical," Meliah said. "We needed to block out and be physical. It's hard to simulate that in practice."

The game marked the third of four consecutive road trips for the road warriors - Wa-Hi traveled to Wenatchee, Eisenhower, Saturday Chiawana, and visits Richland Friday.

"The Wenatchee and Ike trips are killers," Meliah said. "We are still tied for first and the girls aren't satisfied with being tied. We need to learn from this then get rid of it and try to go 6-0 in the next round (of league play)."
