Emma Smith Russell passed away on the morning of Jan. 5, 2012, at an adult family care facility in College Place. Emma was born May 11, 1913, in Colne, England, to Henry and Annie Needham Smith.
After Emma completed her schooling she began a career in retail and retired at the age of 60, as a manageress with Woolworths. Emma was well traveled and it was during a holiday in the Palm Desert area in the mid-1980s that she met and became good friends with Ruth and Jim Russell. After Ruth's death in 1994, Jim contacted Emma with word of Ruth's passing. After several trans-continental visits for both Emma and Jim, they married in England on Jan. 11, 2000, and moved to Walla Walla later that year. Emma continued living in Walla Walla after Jim's death in March 2002.
Emma is survived by Jim's three daughters and their spouses, Mary and Larry Wineteer, Grants Pass, Ore., Jane and Don Wilkins, Walla Walla and Patricia and John Fletcher, Beaverton, Ore. She is also survived by several cousins in England. Inurnment will take place in Colne, England, at a later date. xx
