Elections get under way in region

Ballots are in the mail in Garfield County and go out in Walla Walla and Columbia counties Friday.

Ballots are in the mail in Garfield County, and will be sent Friday in Columbia and Walla Walla counties for the Feb. 14 special elections.

The following measures are on ballots in Walla Walla County:

Walla Walla Transportation Benefit District seeks a 0.2 percent retail sales tax increase to pay for city street improvements.

Walla Walla School District seeks a four-year replacement school programs and operations levy. The levy would collect $10,227,450 in 2013 at an estimated cost of $3.64 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation; $10,483,136 in 2014 at an estimated $3.70 per $1,000 rate; $20,745,225 in 2015, at an estimated $3.75 per $1,000; and $11,013,845 in 2016 with an estimated tax rate of $3.81 per $1,000.

Prescott School District's two-year $585,000 per year replacement maintenance and operation levy. Estimated cost per $1,000 of assessed evaluation: $2.39 each year.

Waitsburg School District's two-year replacement maintenance and operation levy. The levy to be collected in 2013 is $435,000 at an estimated cost per $1,000 assessed valuation of $3.62, and in $447,000 at an estimated cost of $3.72 per $1,000 in 2014.

Dixie School District's two-year replacement maintenance and operation levy, for $230,730 each year. Estimated cost per $1,000 of assessed valuation is $3.48.

In Columbia County, Dayton School District is seeking a four-year replacement M&O levy for $1.3 million each years, beginning in 2013. Estimated cost per $1,000 of assessed valuation ranges from $2.33 in 2013 to $2.26 in 2016.

The district also seeks a levy for technology and school improvements. The levy runs for four years, with the first year's amount at $255,000, to pay for technology and gymnasium bleacher upgrades. The next three years are for $75,000 each for technology. Cost per $1,000 of assessed valuation in 2013 is estimated at 45 cents, 14 cents in 2014 and 2015 and 13 cents in 2016.

Garfield County voters will have two levies on their ballot, including a one-year, $750,000 levy sought by the Garfield County Public Hospital District to be collected in 2013. The purpose of the levy is to generate funds for operation and maintenance and to install a new health information technology system. Estimated cost per $1,000 of assessed valuation is $2.32.

Pomeroy School District is asking for a 1-year, $920,000 replacement maintenance and operation levy. Estimated cost per $1,000 of assessed valuation is $2.64.
