WALLA WALLA - For the second time this season, Whitman College senior David Michaels has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for men's basketball.
Michaels, a 6-foot-7 forward, led Whitman to a pair of big NWC road victories last week, one of which was a come-from-behind 77-66 triumph over Whitworth in Spokane.
That was Whitman's first victory over the Pirates on their home floor since 1986.
After missing Whitman's two previous games to injury, Michaels returned to average 21 points and 4.5 rebounds against Whitworth and Willamette.
In the two games, he shot 73.3 percent from the floor (11-of-15), 80 percent from the 3-point stripe (4-of-5) and 84.2 percent from the free throw line (16-of-19).
On the season, Michaels is averaging 16.7 points and 6.1 rebounds on the season. He is averaging 17.8 points and 7.0 rebounds in the six NWC games in which he has played.
Whitman heads to the weekend with records of 13-4 overall and 6-2 in the NWC, tied for second place and just a game out of first.
