Gene Mayberry
Oct. 10, 1934 - Jan. 17, 2012

Gene Mayberry passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Jan. 17, 2012, of acute leukemia at the age of 77. Services will be held as we celebrate his incredible life on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater.

Gene was born Oct. 10, 1934, in Umapine, and grew up in Milton-Freewater. He had a wonderful childhood, playing, hunting and fishing with siblings, cousins and close friends. He was baptized into Christ by his close friend, Joe Jewett, at the Milton Freewater First Christian Church at age 10. Gene met his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Colleen Megy, at a church youth group meeting during his senior year. They married Aug. 7, 1955. Through the years they added eight fortunate and well-loved children to their family. In addition, Gene Colleen parented and loved numerous foster children and sponsored many children overseas.

Gene graduated from McLoughlin Union High School in 1952 and attended Northwest Christian College for four years. Gene spent most of his career in financial services working as a banker, mortgage broker and business owner. His business ventures included the startup, management and ownership of Eastern Oregon Title and Escrow in La Grande, Or. He retired in 1994. His career adventures kept Gene and his family on the move as they settled in and were actively involved in numerous communities across Oregon and Washington (Milton-Freewater, Seattle, Walla Walla, Pendleton, Myrtle Point, La Grande, Eugene, Tigard, and College Place are just a sampling). Gene always loved hunting, fishing, boating and camping with family and friends. He also enjoyed remodeling houses, watching reading westerns, and traveling. Gene attended Cove Christian Camp as a child the first year it opened and continued to support the camp's operations throughout his life. He especially enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in Montana where many very special family events and memories occurred. Gene was very active in his church and served many years as an elder. He also served as a lifetime board member for Holt International Children's Services.

Gene is survived by his wife Colleen; three sons, Tucker Jan Mayberry, Ken Mayberry, Brian Melissa Mayberry and Brian's sister Pam Kleng; five daughters, Heidi Rob Johnson, Julie Hugh Duvall, Minda Josh Kelsey, Monica Tony Marshall, and Kara Rasmussen; 21 grandchildren, one great-grandson; and his sisters, Carol Gunnels and Barbara Pentland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nolan Zelda Mayberry; his brother, Norman Mayberry; and his father and mother-in-law, Buzz Jeanne Megy.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions in memory of Gene to the Holt International or the Cove Christian Camp in care of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862. xx
