Rex Ellis Gwinn passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 22, 2012, in Houston, Texas, after a sudden illness. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Frances Champlin Gwinn; infant daughter, Catherine Anne Gwinn; and parents, Claudine Ellis Gwinn and William Rex Gwinn. He is survived by son, William Rex Gwinn (Betty S.); grandson, William Samuel Gwinn; daughter, Anne Frances Gwinn (Pam Spayde); cousin, Jack Ellis; nephew, Jeffrey Scott Champlin; and niece, Janet Champlin.
Born in Omak, Wash., on May 12, 1933, Rex grew up in Walla Walla, and graduated from Whitman College, where he played basketball, was a member of Beta Theta Pi, and met Frances. Rex received his MBA from
Stanford and in 1957 took his first job with Continental Oil Co. in Houston, Texas. Later, Rex covered the oil service industry for Rotan Mosle as a research analyst, where his reports were followed by many investment firms around the country and featured in The Wall Street Journal. After Rotan, he was a partner with FSA in Austin, Texas, then managed funds for the Teachers Retirement System. Returning to Houston, Rex finished his working life as vice president of investor relations for Western Atlas. Upon retirement Rex devoted many years to St. Martin's Episcopal Church as a volunteer at The Gathering and in study groups, followed the exploits of his grandson Sam, and saw his wife Frances through the end of her journey. He enjoyed high school and college basketball, football, tennis at the University Club, poker, and, especially, hunting with family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 30, 2 p.m., at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road., Houston, Texas 77056. A reception will follow in the Bagby Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Gathering, in care of St. Martin's. xx
