WALLA WALLA - On Thursday the public will get to meet the top three candidates being considered for police chief and fire chief.
In recent weeks, city officials have reviewed 67 applicants for fire chief and 70 for police chief.
On Monday, the Civil Service Commission will hold an executive session to name the top three finalists for each position.
While the largest group of applicants came from Washington, other states that had a considerable number of applicants apply included California, Arizona, Idaho and Florida.
Last year, Fire Chief Terry Thomas retired, leaving his position vacant; current Police Chief Chuck Fulton announced he will retire this year.
Washington state law allows municipalities to withhold the names of applicants for a public position, as well as resumes and testing scores, but city officials have said they will allow the public to meet the top three candidates on Thursday at a public forum.
The names of the finalists will be announced after Monday's Civil Service Commission meeting.
The final decision for the hiring of each chief will be made by the city manager.
The public meeting will be Thursday, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Marcus Whitman Hotel Renaissance Room, 6 W. Rose St.
