WALLA WALLA - Jay Payne scored 20 points, Mac Stannard added 14, and Michael Crane and Dylan Radliff chipped in with 10 points apiece Saturday night to lead Walla Walla Community College to a 75-69 victory over Big Bend in an NWAACC Eastern Region men's basketball game at the Dietrich Dome.

The Warriors improved to 4-2 in league and 13-6 overall and dropped the Vikings out of a virtual tie for first place in the East Region. BBCC, No. 6 in the latest NWAACC coaches poll, is now 5-2 and 15-3.

"It was tight the whole way," WWCC coach Jeff Reinland said. "We played a match-up zone and slowed them down."

That is, slowed down a Big Bend team averaging about 85 points a game, Reinland said.

Payne made six of his 15 attempts from the field and converted all five of his free throws in the game. Stannard was 5-of-8 on field goals including a 2-for-3 showing from 3-point distance.

Crane was 4-of-8 from the floor - 2-of-5 on 3s. Radliff managed double figures despite a sub-par shooting night (2-for-9).

Big Bend's Antonio Snow was the game's leading scorer with 23 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Long-distance shooting was the telling statistic in the game. WWCC was 13-for-35 and held the Vikings to a pair of treys on 14 hoists.

Reserve Caleb Bravard "hit a couple of huge 3s" in the second half to account for his six points in the game, Reinland said.

Big Bend held a 44-39 edge on the glass despite a game-high nine rebounds from Walla Walla's Dallen Bills.

The Warriors prevailed despite a free-throw disparity of almost 2-to-1. Big Bend made 21-of-26 freebies and WWCC made 12-of-15.

It was an overall team effort," Reinland said. "Anytime you beat Big Bend, it is a good win."

Walla Walla plays at Columbia Basin on Wednesday.
