Waitsburg-Prescott boys shock No. 5 Dayton

Waitsburg-Prescott holds the Bulldogs to just 18 percent from the field as it hands Dayton its first loss.

WAITSBURG - Senior Zach Bartlow led the Waitsburg-Prescott boys with 11 points Monday night against the Dayton Bulldogs in Southeast 2B play, as W-P handed Dayton its first defeat of the season, 51-44.

Waitsburg-Prescott (6-2 SE2B, 9-7 overall) took an early lead, with Billy Brown scoring a 3-pointer to tip the game off.

W-P continued to build its lead to 14-7 with 1:55 left on the first-quarter clock, as Bartlow threw one up and it swished in at the buzzer for a 17-8 lead after one.

During the second quarter, the Bulldogs trailed within six, but W-P ended the first half up, 26-18.

"We came out and decided we would try our best to not let (Garett) Turner beat us," said Waitsburg-Prescott coach T.J. Scott.

"We were hoping they would have an off night after shutting down Turner, and we did a way better job inside on (Kroft) Sunderland," said Scott. "And we kept (Hayden) Fullerton's 3-pointers to a minimum."

Sunderland led the Bulldogs with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Turner added nine points, and Joey Schlachter scored seven of his attempted nine free throws for seven points.

Dustin Wooderchak added nine points for W-P, with Dalton Estes adding eight and Chance Leroue and Brown both throwing in seven.

The third quarter ended with W-P's largest lead, 38-25.

"We lost composure in the fourth quarter and they came back," Scott said. "We just kept missing free throws."

The Bulldogs made a comeback as the W-P boys got into foul trouble, allowing Dayton to convert three-point plays. Turner made five of his seven free throws and with 1:38 left on the clock he brought the victory within reach for the Bulldogs, bringing the score to 49-44.

But the Bulldogs fouled, and W-P scored two more free throws to bring the final score to 51-44.

"It's hard to win when you can't make a basket," Dayton coach Roy Ramirez said. "There were a lot of good chances.

"To lose by seven and only shoot 18 percent shows what kind of ball team we have," Ramirez said.

The Bulldogs are now 7-1 (15-1 overall) and play Tri-Cities Prep tonight in College Place at 7:30 p.m.

Waitsburg-Prescott plays at DeSales at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
