Bruins in semis at Firecracker Tourney

Walla Walla goes 2-1 as its pitchers give up just six runs through three games.

POLSON, Mont. - The Walla Bruins went 2-1 through three days of the four-day Firecracker Tournament, good enough to get them into the semifinals here today.

The Bruins face Mission Valley (3-0 so far in the tournament) today at 1:30 p.m. for a chance to play in the tournament title game. A loss drops the Bruins into a battle for third.

All placing games will be played later this evening or afternoon.

Walla Walla's pitchers allowed just six runs over the three games.

"Our pitching has been the bright spot of the weekend thus far," Bruins coach Jason Parsons said.

The Bruins downed the Mission Rockies in six innings Thursday to start their tournament bid.

Walla Walla jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning before cruising to a 9-1, eight-run, mercy-rule victory.

Luke Reardon's two-run single and an RBI triple by Anthony Arellano highlighted the four-run rally to start the game.

Ali Buenteno added a sacrifice fly RBI in the rally.

Zach Zehner pitched a complete game for Walla Walla, striking out nine and giving up just a pair of walks.

Zehner enacted the mercy rule at the dish in the sixth with a two-RBI single.

In Friday's game agianst the Dillon Cubs, the Bruins were on the losing side of a 4-2 tally.

Jarrod Needham pitched a complete game for the Bruins in the loss. He struck out seven and walked only two.

Six different Bruins had a hit and Walla Walla outhit Dillon 6-5, but the Bruins couldn't get enough clutch hits to win.

Arellano knocked in a run in the game and Zehner scored on a passed ball after reaching on an error previously.

The Bruins trampled the Glacier Twins, 7-1, Saturday behind Reardon's complete game victory on the mound.

Reardon struck out nine and walked two.

Reardon also helped his cause at the plate, hitting a two-run triple in the sixth to push the Bruin lead to 6-1 and ice the victory.

Reardon's catcher, Kelltan Fullmer, added a RBI single in the three-run rally.
