Harold and Nora Jane Bennett of Walla Walla celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a surprise reception June 30 hosted by their children at The Center at the Park.

Several members from their wedding party attended. They also cruised from Hawaii to Australia in February, to be in the South Pacific during the summer.

They met on a blind date in 1960 when Harold returned to Walla Walla after serving three years in Germany with the U.S. Air Force.

They wed June 23, 1962, beside Jefferson Park pond. The Rev. Jasper Havens officiated. Nora Jane's maiden name is Wilson.

Nora Jane had a 20-yearbanking career and worked 10 years with the Department of Commerce. She retired in 1994 she and Harold moved back to Walla Walla.

A member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, she held all offices in chapters and city council. While the children were in school she was PTA president several times and kindergarten president at a private school before it went into the public school system in Spokane.

She chaired the senior all-night party for graduations. She was a Blue Bird and Campfire leader when her daughters were active. She enjoys cross stitch, knitting, crocheting and ceramics.

Harold worked 29 years with the military and 10 years with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He retired in 1994.

He was affiliated with Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles while in Spokane and Lakewood, Colo.

While at Walla Walla High school he played in the Wa-Hi dance band and flew his own Taylorcraft airplane.

He was the Cub Scout leader for his son's troop and attended all the football games when his son played from seventh-grade to senior year.

He enjoys hunting, fishing and making and flying model airplanes.

The Bennetts enjoy watching their granddaughters' dance recitals and grandsons' baseball and football games.

They have two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer and Bruce McCutcheon and Becky Bennett, all of Walla Walla; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Lorilee Bennett of Spokane; five grandchildren, Alex and Jake Bennett, Thomas Ashley, Emilee Bennett and Savannah Ashley. Great-grandson Jaidyn Ashley died at 4 months.
