PENDLETON - The annual Kids Fishing Day at Jubilee Lake will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, and is open to kids 14 years old and younger.
This year's event is sponsored by the Tri-State Steelheaders, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Umatilla National Forest.
Now in its third year, the derby has attracted youth from Oregon and Washington.
"The fishing derby is a great way for families to spend time outside together and to share a love for fishing with the new generation," said Tara Patten of the Tri-State Steelheaders. "There will be plenty of exciting activities for kids to take part in."
Activities include a casting contest and a biggest fish competition. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
While it is encouraged that participants bring their own gear, a limited number of fishing poles will be available for those who do not have their own. Volunteers will be on site to provide instruction to first-time anglers.
Tri-State Steelheaders will provide free hot dogs and pop for all kids who register.
The event is free for kids 14 and under, but anyone over the age of 14 will need to purchase a valid Oregon State fishing license.
"We have a beautiful forest and we want kids to gain an early interest in fishing," said Dave Crabtree, a fisheries biologist at the Umatilla National Forest. "Because Jubilee Lake is stocked with trout, youth will have a good chance of landing a catch, and nothing builds interest like success early on."
Additionally, the day-use fee at Jubilee Lake will be waived for participants until noon that day. Those planning to stay for the afternoon or camp overnight will need to pay the day-use or overnight camping fee.
Jubilee Lake is located 12 miles northeast of Tollgate on Forest Road 64.
From Highway 11 at Weston, take State Highway 204 to Tollgate and turn left on Forest Road 64.
