WALLA WALLA -- No Mary, per se, and not really contrary, but local veterans are making a garden grow.

Staff and volunteers at the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial Veterans Affairs Medical Center are inviting the public to attend an opening for its new horticultural therapy garden, named "The Healing Ground," on Friday at 11 a.m.

The garden area is next to the VA chapel.

The horticultural project is an addition to the Complementary & Alternative Medicine therapy programs offered to all enrolled veterans. "In addition to tai chi, artistic impression, guided imagery and yoga therapy, our veterans now have an opportunity to experience horticultural therapy by tending to this vegetable garden, and being able to enjoy the fruitful benefits, noted spokeswoman Linda Wondra. "All harvested items will be donated to local food banks or shared with local veterans."

For more information call 525-5200, ext. 22811 or email linda.wondra@va.gov.
