WALLA WALLA - The top five qualifiers and seven of the top 10 advanced to today's second round of match-play competition in the Pacific Northwest Golf Association's Men's Amateur Championships that is being contested here this week at the Wine Valley Golf Club.
Top-seeded Carl Jonson, who won that honor by besting Tanner Highman in a sudden death playoff to begin the day, continued his strong play following his blistering course-record 63 Tuesday during the second and final round of medal-play competition.
Jonson, who is from Bainbridge Island, Wash., pushed aside Dan Whitaker of Ellensburg 5 and 4 to move into this morning's round of 32. Jonson was 4-under par through the required 14 holes and took charge of the match with a string of five birdies over the final eight holes after Whittaker had pulled even with a par on the sixth hole.
Whittaker entered the day as the No. 64 seed.
Meanwhile, Highman, who is from Shelley, Idaho, proved worthy of his No. 2 seed with a similar 5 and 4 victory over 63rd seed Eric Peterson of Nampa, Idaho.
The other top 10 seeds to advance Wednesday were No. 3 Dylan Maine of Spokane, who posted the most lopsided match of the day with a 7 and 6 victory over Jeffrey Neeley of Mukilteo, Wash.; No. 4 Charlie Mroz of Woodinville, Wash., who toppled Darren Kuhn of Pocatello, Idaho, 4 and 3; No. 5 Nicholas Chianello of Gresham, Ore., a 5 and 4 winner over Garrett Howard of Spokane; No. 7 Gregg LaVoie of Kennewick, a narrow 2 and 1 victor over Taylor Schmidt of Boise, Idaho; and No. 8 Preston Valder of Yorba Linda, Calif., who took care of Gordon Webb of Malta, Mont., 4 and 3.
In what proved to be the biggest upset of the first round, Jonny Baxter of Pleasanton, Calif., the sixth seed, fell to 59th-seeded Ryan Books of Seattle 1-up. No. 9 seed Brian Jung of Corvallis, Ore., was a 2 and 1 loser to Blake Snyder of Seattle, and 10th-seeded Niall J. Platt of Santa Barbara Calif., lost to Devin Dehuff of Coto De Caza, Calif., on the 19th hole.
There were four extra-hole matches in all, none more exciting than Walla Wallan Tyler Daniels' defeat at the hands of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., golfer Kevin Dehuff on the 21st hole of play.
Daniels, who is the greens superintendent at Wine Valley, was on the golf course on a piece of machinery this morning and unavailable for comment, Wine Valley head professional John Thorsnes said.
"I know that Tyler missed a putt on 17 to win the match and then bogeyed No. 18 that allowed Casper to pull even," Thorsnes said.
The two players matched scores on the first two extra holes. But on the third, Daniels' drive found the long grass and he was unable to find his ball.
"He had to return to the tee with a two-stroke penalty, and that pretty much sealed it," Thorsnes said.
Daniels was one of two local players to survive the 64-player cut after two rounds of medal-play competition. The other, Walla Walla's Ryan Baumgart, lost a 4 and 3 match to Mason Casper of Mapleton, Utah. Casper came into the match as the No. 13 seed, Baumgart at No. 52.
"Ryan just didn't make any putts," Thorsnes said of Baumgart's round. "He told me that he missed four or five putts inside of 10 feet."
No longer a contender in the PNGA Amateur, Baumgart, who is a senior-to-be at DeSales High School, can quickly turn his attention to the annual Banner Bank Junior Invitational that begins today at the Walla Walla Country Club.
"That," Thorsnes said, "is the only upside."
The PNGA tournament continued today with a double round that will trim the field to eight players. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested Friday, with the 36-hole championship match slated for Saturday, with the first 18 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m.
