WALLA WALLA - Emily Baumgart of Walla Walla was alone in first place in the girls 12-14 age division and older brother Ryan Baumgart shared the top spot in the boys 15-17 division after Thursday's first round of the Banner Bank Junior Invitational golf tournament that is being played at the Walla Walla Country Club.
Emily Baumgart shot a 10-over-par 82 and was two shots in front of a pair of girls from Mead, Wash., Megan Billeter and Cailin Spencer, going into this morning's second and final round of the annual tournament.
Ryan Baumgart fired an even-par 72 and was tied with Ryan Newcomb of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., atop a field of 28 in the older boys age group. They were just one shot in front of Drew McCullough of Richland, who was alone in third at 1-over 73, and three shots ahead of four other players deadlocked in fourth place at 75.
Walla Walla's Nick Atwood shot 78 and was in a tie for 14th place with Ben Gleason of Lewiston, and Walla Walla's Dean Atkinson was another shot back at 79 and was alone in 16th place.
Kaceelyn Pouttu of Kellogg, Idaho, and Taylor Kain-Godoy of Richland matched 3-over-par 75s and were tied for the lead in the girls 15-17 age group. Walla Walla's Jessica Huntsman shot 77 and was two shots off the pace and all alone in third place.
Walla Wallan Kendall Dunovant scored 105 for 15th place in the girls' 15-17 division.
The boys 12-14 division lead belonged to Travis Kay of Ellensburg, who carded a 2-over-par 74 and was two shots in front of Joseph Baldeck of Clarkston. Baldeck shot 76 and was alone in second place.
Walla Walla's Scott Kimball was alone in third place after shooting a first-round 80, which left him six strokes off the pace. Riley Chester of Milton-Freewater scored 91 and was in ninth place and Nathan Towner was alone in 10th place after turning in a score of 92.
There are a total of 70 players from around the Northwest participating in the 36-hole tournament.
