EUGENE - Triangle Little League rolled to a 11-1 victory over Tigard here Sunday in its opening game of the Oregon Junior Little League 13-14 age-division state softball tournament.
For Triangle, which represents the communities of Milton-Freewater, Athena, Weston and Adams, it was the first game since June 25 when it closed out its Oregon District 3 championship in Pilot Rock. Sunday's win, coupled with a 4-1 record at district, bumped the team's overall record to 5-1.
Sunday's victory also assured Triangle of a berth in the tournament's semifinal round. Triangle faced Columbia Little League this morning at 11 in a game to determine seeding into the semifinals.
Columbia, which represents Boardman, Umatilla, Irrigon and Echo, also defeated Tigard, a 12-2 decision that eliminated the Portland-area team.
The other half of the state bracket includes Centennial, South Salem-Sprague and Eugene-Shelton.
Jessica Lambert pitched four no-hit innings for Triangle, striking out nine and issuing one walk. MaKayla Kelly completed the no-hitter witho ne inning of relief and was charged with an unearned Tigard run.
Sydney Peal, Colette Robert and Abi Biggs had two hits each for Triangle and Brooke Kralman, Ali Schoeder and Lambert added one hit each. Peal had a single and a double, scored twice and drove in a run; Robert had a single and a triple, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored; and Biggs had a single and a triple and was credited with three RBIs.
Eight of the 11 girls on the Triangle roster scored runs in the game.
The champion of the state tournament will advance to the next level of competition in Tucson, Ariz.
