SPOKANE - The Walla Walla Griz were held to one hit through five innings against Coeur d'Alene here Saturday afternoon at University High School, but the Griz bats came alive late as Walla Walla took a 4-1 win over the Lumberjacks in round one of the state Legion baseball playoffs.

Griz pitcher Ryan Kimball held the Lumberjacks to one run through 6 and 1/3 innings to keep his team in the game.

Walla Walla advances to play Woodinville today at 3 p.m. in round two of the playoffs at the same location.

The Griz rallied to score four runs in the sixth inning..

Blake McKinney led off the sixth with single, and Kal Gray sacrifice bunted McKinney to second base.

Ball four of the intentional walk to Ryan Kimball went to the back stop, sending Kimball to first and McKinney to third base.

Kimball stole second before Colby Watilo singled McKinney in to score.

Watilo stole second to give Walla Walla runners on second and third for Gavin McEvoy, who hammered a 2-RBI double to give the Griz a 3-1 lead.

Trevor Coronado capped the rally with a single to score McEvoy and add on an insurance run.

"It took us awhile to get to their pitcher," Griz coach Ryan Van Dyke said. "He was a crafty lefty that changed speeds well and we finally got a couple of two-out, clutch hits in that sixth inning to score some runs."

Kimball struck out 12 and walked only two while hitting one batter.

"Kimball mixed both his fastball and curveball well," Van Dyke said. "He was really locating his pitches and not giving out too many free passes."

Wyatt Taylor recorded the final two outs for the Griz in the seventh inning to record the save.

McEvoy, the teams No. 2 pitcher, will start for the Griz against Woodinville.

"We hope to play even better today in round two," Van Dyke said. "We got the nerves out in game one. We'll be playing a good team and we'll have to wait and see what happens."
