WALLA WALLA - Jake Campeau pitched a three-hit shutout Sunday afternoon as the Walla Walla Bears put the final touches on a 33-10-1 season with a 10-0 victory over the Lewis-Clark Twins in the second game of a baseball doubleheader at Walla Walla Community College.
The Bears also won the opener 15-5. The first game was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule and the second game lasted just five frames.
Campeau struck out six and issued one walk in his route-going performance. He was backed by a 10-hit Bears' offensive assault that was led by Taylor Lemke's three-hit game.
"Jake's been outstanding on the mound for us all year," Walla Walla coach Brian Kitamura said. "His command was excellent. He was able to throw his slider for a strike whenever he wanted to."
The Bears pounded out 16 hits in the first game, with Spencer Cordeiro leading the way with three singles and a double.
"Spencer hit the ball just great," Kitamura said. "He ended the season on fire, as did Taylor Lemke."
Moe Handcox, Connor Lawhead, Pete Bakker and Brett Christina had two hits each in the first game and Drew Christina pitched all six innings.
Brett Christina had two more hits in the nightcap for a four-hit afternoon.
"This has been one of the most successful seasons in this program's history," said Kitamura, a former Whitman College player who completed his second season in charge of the Bears program. "We're very pleased with how these guys handled themselves all summer, on and off the field.
"It was a small group, too," Kitamura added. "We had 13 on the roster, but most of the time we were playing with 10-to-12 players. And the success of our younger programs - the Bruins are one win away from the state tournament and the Griz are already at state - bodes well for the program."
