What do you see as the most important duty or responsibility a county commissioner has?
I see the duties of the board of commissioners as being good stewards of the county budget. To ensure the safety of those who live, work and visit our community, and the health and wellness of this community. The board of commissioners should be looking for improvements to a stronger local work market, and local tourism. One of the biggest responsibilities should include open communication, as well as respect to all the people of Walla Walla County.
What is your understanding of the relationship of county commissioners to other county elected officials?
My relationship between other elected officials should be "teamwork" with one goal in mind, to represent and achieve the goals of the people of Walla Walla County. There should always be an open-door policy.
What do you see as the top issues facing the county?
I see protection of the people and property as the top issue that Walla Walla County should be looking at. Our local law enforcement is understaffed, equipped with outdated supplies. How can we ask these men and women to protect and serve this community when the board of commissioners cannot assure the officer and their family, their safety while on the job?
How would you approach a solution for the issue you see as the top priority?
The solution is open communication and problem solving with all that are involved, which should also include the voice of the community.
If the county did not spend all budgeted current expense funds, how would you propose savings be allocated?
The elected officials and department heads should meet as a group and prioritize the needs of the communities, then funding should be allocated for those projects. The current expense fund could also be refunded back to the taxpayers.
Is there an issue you would like to address not covered by the previous questions?
Other issues that have been recently presented to the board of commissioners are the county library fund and the aquatic center. The city and county have combined other departments together, why can this not be accomplished with these two projects? Would this not be a WIN WIN!!!!!! for community?
