It's not that Memorial Pool isn't missed -- but $8 million in these fiscally hard times would be like a credit card junky saying, "Just charge it!"
As for its generating income for itself -- an "average" family of two or three children who would like to go swimming a couple times a week, that would be at $5 a head like $40 for one, $80 for two or $120 for three a month. That's not going to happen.
Estimating the population of Walla Walla and College Place approximately at 50,000 and one third being children, if 20,000 came at $5, guestimating what would that gross? A summer? And who would be footing the bill for competitive events?
Yes, the community needs a general "community" pool besides Whitman, Walla Walla University the Y and a kids' pool at Jefferson Park, but we don't have to have "an Aquatic Fantasy" -- just an old-fashioned graduated "pool" at half the price.
