Mercer Island wins Wash. state Little League tourney


WALLA WALLA - Hell hath no fury like Mercer Island scorned.

Mercer Island, a 2009 qualifier for the Little League World Series, advanced to the San Bernardino regional of the Little League World Series Saturday after defeating South Kitsap 11-1 and 6-5.

Mercer Island lost its first game to Kent, 10-0, but bruised its way through the consolation bracket en route to its showdown with South Kitsap, outscoring opponents by almost 8 runs on average.

Mercer Island ousted Walla Walla Valley from the state tournament, 11-1, on Thursday and defeated Mil Creek 13-2 Friday.

Mercer Island will face Oregon Friday at 8 p.m. in San Bernardino.
