WALLA WALLA - The youth group at St. Paul's Episcopal Church raised more than $1,500 in May to benefit the Regional Cancer Center at Providence St. Mary Medical Center. In keeping with the bargain he made with the group, their priest, the Rev. Birch Rambo, will have his head shaved at the youth meeting on Wednesday.
According to a news release from St. Paul's, Rambo challenged the teens to raise the money because an unusual number of St. Paul's parishioners are fighting cancer.
"As our prayer list grew, I became more and more frustrated," Rambo is quoted as having said. "Prayer is wonderful, but I wanted to make a difference and raise awareness of what we, as Christians, can do to answer the prayers of our community. I challenged the youth because I knew that they had the energy and the creativity to make it happen."
The youth group accepted the challenge, and, with the help of Estelle Beatty, youth director, in the last month, they held bake sales, had a rock-a-thon, a car wash and a baked potato bar after Sunday service.
A second part to the challenge is this: if the teens can raise $2,500 before the end of the school year, Rambo will also shave his beard and mustache.
