WALLA WALLA - The Walla Walla Bruins used up their hits in the first game of a Central Washington Junior American Legion League baseball doubleheader against visiting Pasco at Warriors Field on the Walla Walla Community College campus.
The Bruins pounded out 13 hits and scored in every inning to defeat the Sun Devils 11-1 in the opener. But they managed just five hits in the nightcap as Pasco came away with a 6-4 victory to salvage the split.
Walla Walla is now 2-2 in league games and 3-2 overall. The Bruins play at the Milton-Freewater Blazers Wednesday in a non-league game that begins at 7:30 p.m. at McRae/Ireland Field.
Luke Reardon pitched a strong game for Walla Walla in the first game, working all six innings, allowing just a single run on five hits while striking out eight. Reardon didn't walk a batter.
Julian Zamora paced the offense with two singles and a double, driving in a pair of runs. Daniel Lake, Zane Henderson and Kelston Fulmer added a pair of hits each, with Henderson and Zehner contributing doubles.
"We were mostly hitting singles in that first game," Bruins coach Jason Parsons said. "We did a good job of stringing together a lot of hits."
David Pontarolo continued the pattern in the second game with three singles, but that was about the extent of the Bruins offense as Zamora and Anthony Arellano each hit safely once to account for the remaining attack. Pontarolo reached base seven times during the twin bill.
The Bruins scored once in the third inning when Daniel Camacho walked, moved up on Pontarolo's base hit and crossed the plate on an error.
In the seventh, Walla Walla scored three times to cut Pasco's lead to 6-4 and had the tying runs on base. Lake reached on an error and came around to score on back-to-back singles by Pontarolo and Zamora. After Henderson walked, Reardon delivered a sacrifice fly, and after Arellano was hit by a pitch, Jarrod Needham's sacrifice fly plated the fourth run.
"We played real well in game one," Parsons said. "We were squaring up the ball pretty well. In game two, things didn't work out quite as well.
"But it's still early in the summer. We will be fine."
