MILTON-FREEWATER - A trio of Walla Walla pitchers teamed up to pitch a one-hit shutout here Wednesday night as the Bruins defeated the Milton-Freewater Blazers 6-0 in a Junior American Legion baseball game.
Jarrod Needham drew the start on the mound and worked the first three innings. Needham yielded the Blazers' lone base hit, a single by Jacob Partney, notched a pair of strikeouts and issued three walks.
Zane Henderson and Luke Reardon pitched two hitless innings each to finish off the shutout. Henderson chalked up four strikeouts and didn't walk a batter while Reardon struck out a pair and issued no walks.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Nate Sumerlin led off with a home run to left field. Zack Zehner followed with a walk and circled the bases on Kelton Fulmer's triple into the left-center field gap.
However, Walla Walla coach Jason Parsons was disappointed that his team was unable to push Fulmer across the plate after reaching third base with no outs.
"We left him standing there," Parsons said. "We obviously can do a better job of hitting in certain situations. We're kind of showing our age in that regard.
"But we are playing some very good defense," the coach added.
Walla Walla plated an unearned run in the fourth - Ali Buentello singled and moved around to score on a pair of M-F defensive miscues - and then salted the victory away with three runs in the top of the seventh. Zane Henderson tripled, Matt Daniel delivered a one-out RBI single, David Pontarolo followed with a base hit and Julian Zamora doubled to drive in two runs.
The Bruins, 4-2 on the season, will entertain the Yakima Valley Peppers in a Central Washington Junior American Legion League doubleheader Friday at Ray Lane Field. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Walla Walla travels to Othello for a non-league twin bill that begins at noon.
