Jared Floyd Carr

Jared Floyd Carr
April 4, 1981 - May 27, 2012

Jared Floyd Carr, 31, of Walla Walla died early Sunday, May 27, 2012, when he was
struck by a car near Prosser, Washington. He was on the final leg of a long-distance bicycle
ride. Jared was born April 4, 1981, in McMinnville, Oregon to Gary Lynn and
Patricia Ann (Gladden) Carr. He graduated in 1999 from Upper Columbia Adventist
Academy in Spangle, Washington. In 2000 he moved to the Walla Walla Valley to attend Walla Walla University,
achieving Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science in 2003. Jared married Kelley Louise Gillette
on June 20, 2004 and they settled in Walla Walla.

Jared had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He loved hiking and backpacking with his dogs and friends, especially in the
Blue Mountains and North Cascades. He also enjoyed mountain biking and motorcycling in the Blue Mountains.
One of the defining features of Jared's character was challenging himself and others to do more and go further. At
the time of death he was on the last stretch of a 400 kilometer bicycle training ride. This ride was part of a series of required
rides that culminates in a 1200k ride, the most famous ride being the Paris-Brest-Paris ride originally established in 1891. Jared was
a member of Randonneurs USA (rusa.org).

Jared was a respected employee at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington. He was valued
for his kindness and wit, as well as his intelligence and insight. His work in helping to operate a large supercomputer enabled the
success of over 600 scientists from 23 different countries. Jared treasured the time spent with his friends and family.
He was someone people went to for advice and he would drop what he was doing to listen. He had a unique perspective and
made life a more interesting place for those who knew and loved him.

Jared is survived by his wife, Kelley Carr; his parents, Gary and Patricia Carr of Gaston, Oregon; his wife's parents, Patrick
and Nina Gillette of Medford, Oregon; his sister and brother-inlaw, Sara and Nathan Humbert of College Place, Washington; his
grandparents: Violet Gladden of Gaston, Oregon and Jim and Dorothy Pence of Phoenix, Arizona; four nephews: Marshall,
Sammy, Peter and James; three nieces: Isa, Lydia and Audrey; and an extended circle of family and friends who will miss him
dearly. He was preceded in death by an infant sister; his paternal grandfather, Floyd Carr; his paternal grandmother, Delores (Leas,
Carr) Pence; and his maternal grandfather, Clarence Gladden.

The memorial service will be 4:00 pm, Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military
Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362. Pastor Glen Gessele will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The
League of American Bicyclists or M.A.D.D. through the funeral home.
