Robert Gene Lathrop of Sutherlin, Ore., died June 13, 2012, of natural causes.
He was born June 8, 1942, in Walla Walla, to Robert and Alice Lathrop. He graduated from Dayton High School in 1960; earned a bachelor of science in forestry degree from the University of Idaho in 1965, while participating in the U.S. Naval ROTC program. He served as a fighter pilot in the United States Marine Corps from June of 1965 until he was honorably discharged as a captain in August of 1970. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on two separate occasions for, "heroism and extraordinary achievement" while serving in Vietnam.
He and Joy Cornell-Chadek married on March 16, 1975. He worked as a forester for the BLM in California and in Roseburg, Ore., until he retired as the assistant area manager in 1987.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Arthur Lathrop of Pasadena, Calif., and Michael Lathrop of Irvine, Calif.; two stepchildren, Scott Chadek of Arcata, Calif., Lori Roberts of Eugene, Ore.; four grandchildren, Adam and Anna Roberts of Eugene, Andrew Lathrop of Pasadena, Kensaku Lathrop of Irvine, Calif.; a sister, Susan Hirst of Olympia ; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Faith Lutheran Church in Roseburg. A graveside burial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday June 21, 2012, at the Touchet cemetery in Touchet.
