WALLA WALLA - The Walla Walla Griz traded games with Moses Lake Tuesday in American Legion A baseball at Murr Field, losing the first game 9-4 and winning the second game 10-6.

With the win the Griz (13-6 overall, 8-2 in league) edge closer to the end of their league slate, with only games tonight against Moses Lake in Moses Lake and and another home-and-away series against Pendleton remaining. The Griz are currently in first place.

"We're going to try to take the series from them (Moses Lake) and see if we can beat Pendleton to control our own destiny," Griz coach Ryan Van Dyke said. "We're ahead of the other teams in our league, so we'll just have to wait and see. If we do well against Pendleton we'll be in the control seat."

Both games were decided in a fluky fashion.

The Griz were within striking distance at a 4-2 deficit after four innings of the opener before things went sour, with the Sun Devils scoring five runs to put the game out of reach.

"We just didn't play very good defense," Van Dyke said. "We committed five errors and a lot of those were two-out errors that allowed more guys to score.

"The five runs in the fifth, those were just where they put the ball in the right spot and we couldnt make a play on it," Van Dyke said. "It was just one of those games where they got lucky They weren't knocking the ball around."

Luck shifted into the Griz dugout for the start of the second game, as a walk and an error to start the first inning led to a 6-run rally that the Griz rode to a four-run win.

"We had a couple hits but mostly it was errors on them," Van Dyke said. "The pitcher got a little flustered and walked a few guys. We had two runs in before they got an out."

Grizzly Justin Elsom singled in a pair of runs to cap the rally before being tagged out trying to steal second.

"He was doing what we coached," Van Dyke said of the steal attempt. "It was something we'll learn from and do better next time."

The Griz travel to Moses Lake today to finish the series with the Sun Devils with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
