Joy D. Corson, 92, a short-term resident of Fernwood, Idaho, died June 12, 2012, at her home in Fernwood. She was born Jan. 17, 1920, near Brighton, Colo., to Russell and Hattie (Billeter) Durland. She grew up there and graduated from the Brighton High School in 1937.
On March 23, 1945, she married Andy Corson. This union lasted for 58 years until his death. They made their home in Brighton for five years, then moved to the Los Angeles area. Five years later the family moved near Amity, Ore. They remained there for 10 years then moved to College Place. Joy remained there for 46 years before joining her daughter's family in Fernwood last August.
Joy worked as a nurse's aide in a nursing home for several years and then at the VA hospital for 17 years in Walla Walla. She retired in 1982. While working and after retirement she pursued many hobbies. She was an avid gardener. She canned and froze much of the produce and fruits she grew. She collected stamps, coins, spoons and thimbles. She made quilts by the dozens and sewed clothing for her children, grandchildren and orphans. She enjoyed working on her genealogy. She also read books, sometimes three at a time, switching books when she needed a change. She was a member of the Stateline Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters, an infant son and husband. Survivors are her daughter, Verna Sonnentag of Fernwood, Idaho; sons, Alvin Corson of Yakima, David of Oregon City, Ore., Jerry of Los Altos, Calif., and Ronald of Lacey, Wash.; and 16 grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held on July 14, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery in College Place. Pastor Mike Lambert will officiate. The Neptune Society was in charge of cremation services.
