Annual legume, cereal grain variety plot tour set for Tuesday

WALLA WALLA - The Walla Walla County Extension will hold its annual tour of legume and cereal grain variety plots Tuesday.

The legume tour will begin at 3 p.m. at Dwelley Jones' farm, 3053 Russell Creek Road. Rebecca McGee, member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Grain Legume Genetics and Pathology Unit, will share research information.

The cereal grain tour will begin at 6 p.m. at the winter variety plot on Martin Road, off Lower Waitsburg Road, at Jason Beechinor's farm.

Washington State University wheat breeder Arron Carter will discuss the different winter wheat varieties, and Kevin Murphy will talk about barley. Xianming Chen will provide current information on Stripe Rust.

At about 7:30 p.m. the tour will move to the spring variety plot south of Waitsburg on Coppei Road, off McCown Road from U.S. Highway 12 on Glen Smith's farm.

Columbia School Board to hold regular meeting on Monday

BURBANK - The Columbia School Board will hold a regular board meeting a 7 p.m. Monday in the district board room, 755 Maple St.

The board will discuss enrollment; the 2012-13 school year budget; and reviewing policies on education of students with disabilities, public access to district records and bid requirements.

Action items include art and music curriculum adoptions and administrative and exempt contracts.

Board meetings are open to the public.

Athena-Weston School Board to hold budget hearing on Monday

ATHENA - The Athena-Weston School Board will hold a budget hearing Monday at 6:45 p.m. at the Athena Elementary library, 375 S. Fifth St.

The board will discuss the 2012-13 school year budget. After the work session, the board will hold a special meeting to adopt the budget.

An executive session will follow to discuss contract negotiations.
