LEWISTON - The Walla Walla Diamond Busters '96 16-and-under fastpitch team won the Hells Canyon Rampage tournament here last weekend.
The Diamond Busters are made up of players from Walla Walla, Touchet, Moses lake and the Tri-Cities.
The Diamond Busters opened the tournament with an 8-0 win over Palouse Thunder, with Makayla Bishop in the circle and Cassie Ramsey behind the plate.
In the second game, Colfax was the next Walla Walla victim, 10-5, with Keziah Doyle pitching for the Diamond Busters.
Ramsey took over again in the third game, and led the Diamond Busters to a 10-9 win over Moscow Madness.
The Northwest Wildfire then handed Walla Walla a 26-5 defeat in a weather-delayed game that began Saturday and ended Sunday.
The Diamond Busters then downed Palouse Thunder, 9-5, and Colfax, 10-4, to play for a berth in the championship game.
Sarah Gastman then took the circle and led Walla Walla to a 13-4 win over Palouse to face the Northwest Wildfire in a re-match for the tourney title.
Walla Walla fell behind by five runs before tying it at 4-all in the fourth inning. In the sixth, with the score tied 11-11, the Diamond Busters' two-runs were answered by Wildfire's three runs into the seventh inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Walla Walla pitcher Doyle hit a single to tie the game. Bishop then smacked the game-winning hit for the 15-14 win.
The weekend before, the Diamond Busters went 3-2 to place second at the Sunshine Summer Kickoff Tournament in Selah, Wash. Walla Walla beat La Salle Lightining, 18-6, and the Diamond Devils twice, 16-5 and 17-9. They lost to Washington Spartans, 11-4, and again in the championship game to the Spartans, 20-19, in extra innings.
