WALLA WALLA -- Country star Rodney Atkins will headline this year's Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days concert, fair officials have announced.
The unveiling of the main act for the Aug. 29 concert was among the highlights of the annual fair kickoff dinner held Thursday night at the fairgrounds. Along with Atkins, Casey James will be the opening act for Atkins' show.
Officials also named Leland and Carolyn Hellberg as co-parade marshals for this year's Fair & Frontier Days parade, which will be held starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 1 in downtown Walla Walla.
A native of East Tennessee, Atkins has had six No. 1 hits, including "Watching You" and "These Are My People," from his first three albums. Two other recent hits have been "Take A Back Road" and "Farmer's Daughter."
A native of Cool, Texas, James first gained national attention with his third-place run on the ninth season of "American Idol." After his television debut, James went to Nashville where he toured with Sugarland in early 2011.
He has also been performing his own shows while working on an upcoming debut album, set for release this year.
Other announcements made at Thursday's dinner included naming Don Johnson Sales Inc. as winner of this year's Distinguished Sponsor Award and Ted Millgard, Ken Frazier and Ron Miller as the Fair & Frontier Days 2012 Cowboy Legends.
The theme for this year's fair and rodeo is "Farm Fresh Family Fun."
