SPOKANE - Dayton dug itself a 59-38 hole with 4:13 left in the game here Thursday in state Class 2B boys basketball quarterfinal action.

The Bulldogs roared back to cut Toutle Lake's lead to 59-51 with 32 seconds to go, but the Ducks hit 3-of-4 free throws to hang on and notch a 62-51 win.

"We did come back and just fell a little bit short," Bulldog coach Roy Ramirez said. "That shows what kind of kids they are. They just don't give up. That's exactly what we want them to do, come out and play the whole game. We got it down to eight, but just ran out of time."

The loss dropped the Bulldogs into a loser-out battle with La Conner, a 46-38 loser to Colfax on Thursday, today at 12:15. The winner advances to Saturday's trophy round.

Toutle Lake plays Colfax tonight at 7:15 in a semifinal battle.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start in their first state appearance since defeating the Ducks, 68-46, for the 1995 state title. Kroft Sunderland scored 20 seconds into the game for a 2-0 Dayton lead.

Colton Bickelhaupt picked the Ducks apart as he went inside to his two posts, Joey Schlachter and Sunderland. Schlachter converted three Bickelhaupt assists into buckets and Sunderland converted another. Throw in two Garett Turner free throws and the Bulldogs led 12-11 after one quarter.

Toutle Lake's leading scorer, Austin Heinzman at 16.2-points-per game, took over in the second quarter.

Heinzman hit 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc and scored 11 points in the quarter to lead the Ducks to a 31-20 lead at intermission.

"He (Heinzman) is a great shooter and we knew if we left him open, he would make those shots," Ramirez said. "We just lost him a couple of times and he got some shots off. Other than that second quarter, we contained him pretty well."

The Bulldogs suffered early foul trouble as Hayden Fullerton, Sunderland and Wyatt Frame each picked up two and sat out part of the first half, and the Bulldog offense got out of sync. Dayton hit only 2-of-10 from the field in the second quarter as the Ducks took control.

"It wasn't our best game today," Ramirez said. "We were a little tentative. I don't know if you attribute that to being here and on the big stage (state tournament) or what have you."

The Ducks opened the second half with a 14-7 run and stretched the lead to 45-27 following an Austin Hoffman bucket with 2:13 left in the quarter. Turner outscored the Ducks 7-2 the rest of the way to keep the Bulldogs within range, down 47-34 going to the fourth.

Heinzman scored six of his game-high 19 points to lead the Ducks on a 12-4 run, including two free throws that completed a Toutle Lake five-point play and give the Ducks that 59-38 lead with 4:13 left.

Tyler York drained a trey, but Dayton was called for a foul underneath the basket and Heinzman completed the five-point play with two free throws to produce the 59-38 Duck lead.

"It is what it is," Ramirez said of the play. "That kind of hurt us a little bit. But I was proud of the guys for coming back and not giving up."

Bickelhaupt buried a trey to start the Bulldog comeback. Frame scored and Fullerton added a deuce, and made two steals on the next two Duck possessions. Fullerton scored two free throws after being fouled on his first steal, and went coast-to-coast on his second steal.

Turner found Frame for two more, as Dayton completed a 13-0 run to get within 59-51 with 32 ticks left. Clutch Duck free throws sent Toutle Lake to the semifinals with the 62-51 win.

"That last four minutes showed exactly what we are made out of," Ramirez said. "I think we'll be OK."

Turner and Fullerton led the Bulldogs with 13 each. Bickelhaupt posted a game-high seven assists. Sunderland grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, and Schlachter took home the sportsmanship award as well as chipping in 10 points and seven boards.
