Two prison units back on lockdown after staff assault

WALLA WALLA -- Two Washington State Penitentiary units are back on restricted status after an assault on corrections officer Thursday.

The officer was assaulted about 5:45 p.m. by an inmate using a food tray during the evening meal in Delta unit, one of four close-custody units in the prison's West Complex.

The officer was taken to a local medical facility to be checked, said Shari Hall, prison spokeswoman.

The four units, Delta, Echo, Fox and Golf, had been coming off a lockdown that started the night of Feb. 4 due to a fight between four inmates. Restrictions for Delta and Echo units have now been increased, but restrictions in Fox and Golf units will continue to ease.

Visiting for all four units has been canceled today, but will be allowed for Fox and Golf units this weekend. Visits will be allowed Monday for the medium security units in the West Complex.

The remainder of the prison remains on normal operating status.
