Whitman picks up first win in doubleheader split

The Missionaries defeat Puget Sound 7-1 in the first game of a doubleheader, but fall, 8-6, in the nightcap.

WALLA WALLA - After cruising to a 7-1 victory in the opener, Whitman College fell just a bit short of a Northwest Conference doubleheader sweep on Saturday as Puget Sound held off the Missionaries for an 8-6 victory in the nightcap at Borleske Stadium.

Junior right-hander Justin Weeks tossed eight innings of six-hit ball in game one, which kicked off the NWC season for both clubs.

Alex Baugh nailed down game two for Puget Sound, getting the last two outs as Whitman left the bases loaded.

Sophomore Kyle Moyes had a banner day at the plate for Whitman, going four for seven on the day with a home run in both games. Sophomore Kyle Buckham also homered in game one.

Weeks held the Loggers scoreless on four hits - two of them infield singles - through the first seven innings of the opener.

With Whitman up 7-0, Weeks lost his shutout bid in the top of the eighth, hitting a batter in the foot with one out before a bad-hop single to second set the table for Casey Coberly, who grounded an RBI-single through the left side.

Weeks finished the inning and gave way to freshman Spencer Hobson, who walked one in the ninth while getting the final three outs.

Whitman's offense turned to small ball in the bottom of the second inning to give Weeks a 3-0 cushion. After singles by sophomore Jimmy Madden, Moyes and sophomore Chris Konolige loaded the sacks, freshman Eli Mathieu knocked in a pair of runs with a single to center.

Sophomore Chris Andrews smacked a two-out single to center to tally the inning's third run.

Moyes was hit by a pitch in the Whitman fourth and eventually scored the fourth Missionary run on an Andrews ground-out to third.

Whitman extended its lead to 6-0 in the sixth when Madden walked and scored ahead of Moyes, who launched a towering shot over the left-field fence for his second home run of the season.

The Missionaries made it 7-0 when Buckham led off the bottom of the seventh with a bang, ripping a liner over the wall in left for his first home run of the spring.

Whitman and Puget Sound complete their three-game weekend series with a single game today at noon at Borleske.
