Michael Dawes
March 31, 1947 - March 1, 2012

Michael (Mike) Arlington Dawes passed away on Thursday, March 1, 2012, at Friendship Health Center in Portland. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, LaRae; and his sons, Michael Jr. and Gregory; and his faithful dog, Jet.

Born in Portland, to Gene and Mabel Dawes on March 31, 1947, Mike moved with his family at the age of 9 to Walla Walla. He attended Walla Walla High School and was an outstanding athlete who excelled in baseball, football and basketball. Mike continued his education at Columbia Basin College in Pasco on a baseball scholarship before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1966. He was a veteran serving four years active and two years reserve duty in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as a communications technician on the USS Jamestown. His commendations included the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After their marriage, Mike and LaRae moved to Portland to raise their family. Mike was employed at First Call Heating Cooling for 38 years until he retired in 2009 as its longest term employee. Mike was an adventurous family man who enjoyed camping, scuba diving and traveling. Their travels together took them to dive the Hawaiian Islands, Cozumel, Roatan, Bay Islands and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. He was a remarkable scuba diver and held PADI Dive Certifications as an open water diver, specialty night diver, specialty underwater photographer, specialty wreck diver, specialty deep diver and dive master. Mike was a wonderful husband, father and son and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his father, Gene Irvin Dawes of Dayton; his brothers, Gene Dawes Jr. of Vancouver, Tim Dawes of Prineville, Ore., and Dennis Dawes of Gresham, Ore.; step-sisters, Colleen McCauley of Walla Walla, Tamara and Richard Jones of McFarland, Calif., Debra and Thomas Jamison of Walla Walla; and step-brother, Wayne and Diana McCauley of Walla Walla; mother-in-law, Virginia Passmore of Waitsburg; sister-in-law, Gayle and Bert Kinman of Walla Walla; brothers-in law, Norm and Anne Passmore of Dayton, and Steve and Veronica Passmore of Walla Walla; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews and great nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Mabel Gilpin; father-in-law, Norman J. Passmore; step-mother, Patricia Dawes; and step-father Russ Gilpin.
