Aug. 28, 1975 - March 7, 2012
Richard M. (Michael) Helling was born in Pendleton on Aug. 28, 1975, to Marylin D. Robinson Helling of Weston and James R. Helling of Milton Freewater.
Michael grew up in Pendleton, Elgin, Irrigon and Weston. He attended schools in Elgin, Weston and Athena, graduating from Weston McEwen in 1993. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent time in the Atlantic and Pacific while stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station as an aviation maintenance administration man. After the Navy, he attended Blue Mountain Community College until he began working for Union Pacific Railroad as an engineer, his lifelong dream.
Michael was passionate about anything outdoors. He would also go anywhere, anytime. As an avid fan of live entertainment, he attended countless concerts and football games with friends and family. Michael loved going to Mariner games and spending time in Seattle. He enjoyed photography along his train rides and playing video games with his nephew. He also was an avid reader of every kind of book of knowledge. He could tell you an answer to any sports trivia there is.
He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Stephen and Angie of Bremerton, Wash., Chris and Sara of Pendleton; one nephew, Lucas Helling of Pendleton; uncles, Bill Robinson of Spokane, Curt and Tricia Robinson and Stacey Robinson of Pendleton; three aunts, Kathy Luu of Seattle, Barbara and Larry Hutchings of Des Moines, Wash., and Theresa and Kevin Martel of Salem; and grandmother, Mary Helling of Pendleton. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Larry and Shirley Robinson; aunt, Debbie Robinson; and grandfather, James M. Helling.
We will miss him dearly and he will be forever in our hearts. xx
