PENDLETON - Three home runs and 13 hits helped lift the Mac-Hi softball team to a 10-6 upset of 2011 5A Oregon state runner-up Pendleton Tuesday on the Buckaroos' home field.
"Basically the girls came out and made great contact all game," Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. "The girls executed really well, every single girl had contact."
Two home runs came as part of the Pioneers' four-run fourth inning. Lead off batter Kariss Carrillo hit a solo homer before a single and an error put two on base for another blast from Cheyenne Kessler which helped build a 5-1 Mac-Hi advantage.
Mac-Hi's final home run came in the top of the seventh after Pendleton narrowed the Pioneer lead to 7-5 on a four-run sixth inning. After Mac-Hi's Megan Reed singled, Kalyn Odman hit a double to send her home. Pitcher Kaitlyn Erm hit a two-run homer to extend Mac-Hi's lead to 10-5.
Pendleton answered with a run in the seventh, but couldn't muster a rally.
Both teams struggled through strong winds, Christian said, which helped cause seven errors between both teams.
The victory was the first game of the season for Mac-Hi.
The Pioneers travel to face two-time Oregon state 4A champion Cascade Friday at 4:30 p.m. and face last season's 4A state runner up Banks in a noon doubleheader Saturday.
