MILTON-FREEWATER - It wasn't the kind of start to the 2012 season that Mac-Hi baseball coach Mike Garcia and his players had in mind.

Visiting Umatilla banged out 13 hits and benefited from eight Pioneer errors here Wednesday night during a 16-5 victory at McRae Ireland Field that was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Lead-off hitter Andres Sanguino led the way with four hits for the Vikings and Bridger Hurley added three.

"This is not the start we anticipated," Garcia said. "We did not play to the potential we're capable of. We had too many errors. That's not going to help you stay in games."

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after a Hurley RBI double, and run-scoring singles by Brandon Williams and Kile Wilson.

Mac-Hi got a run back in the bottom of the first on a single to center field by Kevin Cuellar.

After a scoreless second inning, Umatilla got an RBI double from Nick Snyder to reclaim a three-run lead, 4-1.

The Vikings blew the game open in the fourth inning. Zach Ash delivered one run with a single, and Dakota Dufloth followed with a grand-slam home run over the left-field fence.

But Dufloth was ruled out on a Mac-Hi appeal after failing to touch home plate amidst the celebration after his long fly.

The Pioneers tallied three runs in their half of the fourth. Jordan Leinbach swatted a two-run single to left and Jose Aguilar produced an RBI single to right.

Umatilla used three Pioneers miscues to plate four runs in the fifth inning, and added four more in the sixth. A three-run double by Ash capped the Vikings' scoring for the game.

Mac-Hi, which got two hits apiece from Dylan Shuler and Troy Kessler, picked up its final run on a Umatilla error in the fifth.

"Lots of credit goes to Umatilla," Garcia said. "They hit the ball and their pitchers put balls in spots. Umatilla came to play. Hats off to them."

The Pioneers' next game is Friday at Madras.
